We ranked 15 popular expat cities using CostMaps data across five weighted categories: cost of living (25%), safety (20%), healthcare quality (20%), internet speed (15%), and visa accessibility (20%). No vibes -just data.

The Rankings

1. Taipei, Taiwan

  • Cost of living: $1,200-1,500/month (excluding rent ~$854)
  • Safety index: 83.8 (top 3 globally)
  • Internet: 264 Mbps average -among the fastest in the world
  • Healthcare: Universal NHI coverage. World-class hospitals. Very affordable.
  • Visa: Gold Card for skilled professionals (3 years, tax incentives)
  • Taipei consistently surprises people. Incredible food, safe, fast internet, affordable healthcare, excellent public transit. The Gold Card visa is one of the most generous skilled worker programs globally.

    2. Prague, Czech Republic

  • Cost of living: $1,800-2,200/month
  • Safety index: 75.5
  • Internet: Good broadband (~100 Mbps)
  • Healthcare: Universal system. Very high quality, especially in Prague.
  • Visa: EU Zivnostensky list (freelancer visa) is accessible
  • Heart of Europe, very safe, affordable by EU standards, excellent beer. Walkable, beautiful, and well-connected to the rest of Europe.

    3. Lisbon, Portugal

  • Cost of living: $1,800-2,200/month
  • Safety index: 68.7
  • Internet: 187 Mbps average
  • Healthcare: Universal SNS + cheap private supplement
  • Visa: D8 Digital Nomad Visa, path to EU residency/citizenship
  • Still the #1 destination for English-speaking expats in Europe. Getting more expensive, but quality of life remains outstanding.

    4. Chiang Mai, Thailand

  • Cost of living: $800-1,100/month -cheapest city on this list
  • Safety index: 78.2
  • Internet: 248 Mbps -surprisingly fast
  • Healthcare: Good private hospitals. Bangkok's world-class facilities are a short flight away.
  • Visa: DTV visa (5 years, THB 500K savings requirement)
  • The OG digital nomad city. Incredible value, huge expat community, great food, and now with fast internet and a proper nomad visa.

    5. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

  • Cost of living: $2,000-3,500/month
  • Safety index: 39.5 (lower perception, though violent crime is low)
  • Internet: ~110 Mbps
  • Healthcare: Excellent private hospitals. Very affordable.
  • Visa: DE Rantau Nomad Pass ($2,000/month requirement)
  • English widely spoken, incredible food, modern infrastructure. The safety perception score is misleading -KL is generally safe for expats.

    6-10: Strong Options

    Bangkok ($2,000-3,500/month): World-class in every category. Higher cost than Chiang Mai but more cosmopolitan.

    Budapest ($1,400-1,800/month): Beautiful, affordable EU capital. White Card visa available. Thermal baths, great nightlife.

    Mexico City ($1,500-2,000/month): Incredible food and culture. Same timezone as the US. Safety perception is lower (32.5) but varies enormously by neighborhood.

    Tbilisi ($1,000-1,400/month): One year visa-free for most nationalities. Very affordable. Growing tech scene. Internet is slower (~41 Mbps) than other options.

    Barcelona ($2,000-2,500/month): Spain's Digital Nomad Visa with Beckham Law (24% flat tax). World-class city. More expensive than others on this list.

    11-15: Worth Considering

    Ho Chi Minh City: $1,200-1,800/month. Fast-growing. Very cheap. Safety perception lower.

    Medellin: $1,200-1,500/month. Spring-like climate. Large expat community.

    Buenos Aires: $1,200-1,600/month. Great USD value. European feel. Banking can be complicated.

    Berlin: $2,200-2,800/month. Most affordable major Western European city. Freelance visa available. Creative scene.

    Dubai: $2,500-4,000/month. Zero income tax. Very safe. Hot. Expensive.
