The Landscape

As of 2026, over 50 countries offer dedicated digital nomad or remote work visas. The market has exploded since 2020. But the quality varies enormously -from Croatia's tax-exempt 18-month visa to Japan's restrictive 6-month cap.

We ranked the most popular options by what actually matters: income requirements, tax treatment, duration, and quality of life.

Best Overall: Spain

Spain's Digital Nomad Visa stands out for one reason: the Beckham Law. For up to 6 years, you pay a flat 24% tax rate instead of Spain's normal 19-47% progressive rates. Income requirement is EUR 2,763/month (200% of the minimum wage). You get 1 year, renewable to 3. Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid are world-class cities. Spain is a no-brainer for high earners.

Best Tax Deal: Croatia

Croatia's digital nomad visa exempts you from local income tax entirely. Income requirement is EUR 2,540/month -the lowest in the EU. Duration is 18 months, renewable once for up to 3 years total. Application fee is about EUR 60. The catch: Croatia is still developing its tech infrastructure outside Zagreb, and the visa doesn't lead to permanent residency.

Best for Long-Term: Thailand (DTV)

Thailand's Destination Thailand Visa is uniquely generous: 5-year validity with multiple entries, 180 days per stay. Requires THB 500,000 (~$14,500) in savings. No tax on foreign income if you stay under 180 days per entry. Application fee is about THB 10,000 (~$290).
