The Data

We compiled mid-level software engineer salaries (3-5 years experience) across 15 countries using CostMaps salary data, cross-referenced with industry surveys. The numbers include gross salary, effective tax rate, and purchasing power adjusted for local cost of living.

The Full Comparison

Tier 1: Highest Gross Pay

USA: $130,000-145,000 gross. Effective tax rate 25-32% (varies hugely by state -0% in Texas, ~13% in California). Take-home: $98,000-108,000. Cost of living index 100.

Switzerland: $108,000-120,000 gross. Tax rate 12-18%. Take-home: $90,000-105,000. Cost of living index 122. Despite the highest costs in the world, Swiss developers keep a lot.

Tier 2: Strong Markets

Australia: $75,000-100,000 (AUD 115K-155K). Tax rate 25-34%. Take-home: $55,000-72,000. CoL index 73.

Canada: $75,000-90,000 (CAD 105K-125K). Tax rate 25-33%. Take-home: $55,000-65,000. CoL index 68.

UK: $60,000-75,000 (GBP 48K-60K). Tax rate 25-33% (income tax + National Insurance). Take-home: $42,000-55,000. CoL index 75. NHS inclusion is a hidden benefit worth $5,000-10,000/year.

Netherlands: $65,000-85,000 (EUR 60K-78K). Standard tax rate 37-42%, but the 30% ruling for expats drops the effective rate to ~20%. Take-home with ruling: up to $68,000.

Ireland: $65,000-80,000 (EUR 60K-74K). Tax rate 30-40% (income tax + USC + PRSI). Take-home: $40,000-52,000. CoL index 73. Dublin is an expensive tech hub.

Germany: $63,000-80,000 (EUR 58K-74K). Tax rate 35-42% (highest social contributions in Europe). Take-home: $37,000-50,000. CoL index 65.

Tier 3: Great Purchasing Power

Singapore: $50,000-72,000 (SGD 67K-96K). Tax rate 7-15% -among the lowest for developed nations. Take-home: $44,000-66,000. CoL index 85.

UAE (Dubai): $45,000-65,000 (AED 165K-240K). Tax rate: 0%. Every dollar is take-home. CoL index 65. Best tax deal on the list.

Poland: $40,000-60,000 (PLN 160K-240K). Tax rate 19-32% (flat or progressive). Take-home: $30,000-45,000. CoL index 40. A $45K salary in Warsaw buys a lifestyle equivalent to $110K+ in NYC.

Romania: $35,000-50,000 (RON 160K-230K). Flat 10% income tax but 25% social contributions. Take-home: $22,000-33,000. CoL index 35.

Tier 4: Growing Markets

Japan: $36,000-55,000 (JPY 5.4M-8.3M). Tax rate 20-30%. Take-home: $26,000-42,000. CoL index 76. Notably low for a rich country -seniority-based pay culture keeps tech salaries compressed.

Brazil: $14,000-24,000 (BRL 70K-120K). Tax rate 15-27.5%. Take-home: $11,000-19,000. CoL index 35.

India: $10,000-25,000 (INR 8L-21L). Tax rate 10-20%. Take-home: $8,500-21,000. CoL index 25. Top-tier companies (Google India, Microsoft India) pay $30K-60K, well above average.

The Purchasing Power Story

Raw salary rankings are misleading. When adjusted for local cost of living:

1. Poland and Romania offer the strongest purchasing power relative to salary

2. UAE benefits from zero tax -a $60K salary is fully take-home in a moderate-cost city

3. USA still leads on absolute take-home, but San Francisco rent ($3,500+/month) erases much of the advantage

4. Germany has the biggest gap between gross and net due to heavy social contributions (but those contributions fund excellent public services)
